2. ShareX: Windows screen clips and GIF workflows
ShareX combines screenshots, screen recording, GIF capture and configurable after-capture tasks in a free Windows application. It is useful for showing a short reproduction sequence or capturing several pieces of evidence for a bug report.

Clipchamp’s screen and camera recorder is free and supports recordings up to 30 minutes per session, with no limit on the number of sessions. Its editor lets you trim a recording and adjust screen and camera footage separately.
This is a useful approach for a walkthrough that needs mistakes removed or a camera layout adjusted before sharing. A longer lesson needs multiple recordings rather than one continuous free recording. Check whether any assets or features you add to the edit require a paid plan before committing to the finished project.

4. Loom Starter: short recordings with hosted sharing
Loom Starter currently lists 25 videos per person, a five-minute screen-recording limit and video quality up to 720p. Screen and camera recording, captions, comments and sharing features support short asynchronous explanations.

5. ScreenPal: short narrated tutorials without a watermark
ScreenPal, formerly Screencast-O-Matic, offers free screen, webcam and microphone recording with no account required and no watermark. Its recording-limit documentation specifies 15 minutes per free video and an unlimited number of recordings.
The free recorder includes drawing and basic trimming tools. System/computer audio capture is listed among its upgrade features, so do not assume that free microphone narration also includes the sound playing through your computer.

6. Screencastify: browser recordings with a creation quota
Screencastify runs in the browser and gives new free users their first 10 videos, up to 30 minutes per video. Its account FAQ also lists watermarks on free videos, five exports of each type and viewer-only collaboration permissions.
The 10-video allowance is a creation quota, not simply space for 10 videos at a time. Deleting a free video does not return a recording slot. This matters if you plan to make frequent retakes or regularly replace training clips.
Choose it when: a limited batch of browser demonstrations fits the allowance. Confirm the free export and collaboration limits before making it your ongoing team recording system.
7. NVIDIA ShadowPlay: capture for compatible GPU owners
NVIDIA ShadowPlay, available through the NVIDIA app, supports gameplay recording and DVR-style Instant Replay. Its hardware and codec capabilities depend on the GPU, driver and selected settings.
NVIDIA documents AV1 recording on supported hardware and higher frame-rate capture in its AV1 recording update. Those specifications do not guarantee a particular recording quality or performance impact on every computer. Check the options actually available on your machine and play back a sample.
Choose it when: you already have compatible NVIDIA hardware and want game capture or replay saving. It is not a general solution for computers with other GPUs.
8. Xbox Game Bar: quick Windows app and game clips
Xbox Game Bar can record a game or app on Windows. Microsoft’s recording instructions use Windows + Alt + R to start and stop capture, and Windows + Alt + M to toggle the microphone. Clips are saved as MP4 files under Videos/Captures.
Treat it as an app-focused recorder. For a tutorial that switches across windows or needs a selected desktop region, choose a recorder designed for that capture scope. Check the capture and audio settings before relying on it for an important demonstration.

9. Vimeo Record: screen capture in the Vimeo workflow
Vimeo’s screen recorder supports screen and webcam capture through its recording tools. The Free plan has a 30-minute limit per recording, and Free/Basic videos include a Vimeo watermark when embedded. Storage and other account limits are separate from recording duration.
Do not follow an old desktop-app installation tutorial without checking its availability. Vimeo says its Record desktop app is unavailable for new installs and directs users to Record Studio or its Chrome extension.

10. Awesome Screenshot: distinguish local and cloud limits
Awesome Screenshot’s free allowance depends on where you save the recording. Its official limit guide specifies five minutes per recording saved locally for unsigned-in, Free or Basic users. Free/Basic cloud accounts can store up to 20 recordings, with each cloud recording limited to six hours.
Free/Basic cloud recordings can be downloaded and edited only up to one hour in duration. A long cloud recording allowance therefore does not mean you can make the same long recording in local-save mode. Choose the destination before recording and confirm which mode your extension is using.

11. Apowersoft Online Recorder: a browser route for occasional capture
Apowersoft’s current online recorder offers a browser recording route without installation and advertises no time limit or watermark. It supports screen and webcam capture with local saving or cloud uploading.
The same website includes desktop products and older launcher troubleshooting material. Use the online Start Recording route if you want browser capture; a desktop download is a different workflow. Browser, operating-system and audio-sharing support still affect what can be captured.
Choose it when: you need an occasional browser recording. The vendor recommends its desktop version for recordings longer than 30 minutes because long online recordings may fail to save.
12. Apple Screenshot and QuickTime: built-in Mac recording
On a Mac, press Shift + Command + 5 to open Screenshot recording controls. QuickTime’s New Screen Recording command can open the same controls. Apple’s screen-recording instructions explain capture regions, microphone selection and saving.
Audio advice must match your macOS version. Apple’s documentation says Include System Audio is available in macOS 27 Golden Gate or later.
